Disciplinary Recognized Self-Presence: Self-Mention Used With Hedges and Boosters in PhD Students’ Research Writing

چکیده

Despite the existing extensive research on stance markers such as hedges, boosters, and self-mention in academic writing, few studies, however, examined co-occurrence of these to help authors project their identities writing. In this study, we examine how with boosters hedges are used by writers different groups manifest authorial presence what functions they realize Two self-compiled corpora were constructed compare discursive practice between Chinese PhD students journal article from four disciplines hard applied pure science. general, student use fewer but more than expert writers. An examination rhetorical devices shows that both employ most for presenting findings, inclined invest when describing procedures or elaborating arguments. Meanwhile, mostly arguments, compared writers, seem overly obscure function.
